Shannon stared at the two motorcycles parked side by side along the lonely stretch of road and wanted to scream. There were flat tires on both of them, with no cell service this far out in the boonies, and the Montana pack was possibly in terrible danger.

And what did she and Jake do but sit here and stare at the bikes. Damn. She checked her watch. Bay had hitched a ride into the nearest town with a wheel under each arm almost two hours ago. She couldn’t believe they’d both picked up nails along the same stretch of forsaken highway, but it appeared someone had dropped an entire box of them just up the road.

She’d killed some time picking up as many as she could find in order to protect other drivers, but now she waited and watched while the sun disappeared over the nearby hills. Headlights glimmered in the distance. Shannon glanced at Jake. He sat on a large boulder, staring at the lights. Finally he jumped down and strode quickly across the hard ground to where Shannon stood on the side of the road. He gestured toward the oncoming lights. “It’s Bay. He talked to Lucien. Anton Cheval’s plane went down somewhere today, probably at the exact time we heard the cry for help. Our timing may help them pinpoint the location. Mik, AJ, and Tala are headed this way and shouldn’t be far behind us. We’re to get the bikes going, head into North Dakota, and keep listening for any contact from the Montana group. If they’re alive, they should be able to project quite a distance.”

“Do you know any of them?” Shannon had only heard of the four from Montana.

Jake shook his head. “No, but with any luck, we’ll meet them soon. Here’s Bay.”

The state trooper who delivered Baylor and the patched tires helped them get the wheels back on the bikes before he left. They rode in silence, taking a direct route this time, aiming for the heart of North Dakota. Shannon hung on to Jake and kept her thoughts wide open.

Exhaustion finally forced them to stop in a tiny town east of Bismarck. They ate at a small diner, then went directly to their shared room. Running tonight was not an option, not with lives at stake.

Jake’s cell phone rang just as they stepped through the door. Shannon carried their bags in while Jake talked quietly. His voice sounded harsh, rough with exhaustion. After a moment’s conversation, Shannon heard him say, “We’re about half an hour east of Bismarck, on Interstate ninety-four.”

She’d stripped out of her leathers and stopped on her way into the shower to listen. Jake gave the name of their motel, then cut the connection. “That was AJ,” he said. “Bay, call the desk, okay? See if you can get the connecting room to ours for Mik, AJ, and Tala. They should be here before too long.”

Bay grabbed the phone between the two king beds. Shannon headed for the shower, warmed the water, and slipped beneath the spray.
